Maths & Science in Term 4
Secondary students have been hard at work in maths and science this term on a whole array of topics, from algebra and exchange rates, to the solar system and foetus development.
Maths
Mercury learnt about Operations with directed number this term. They did find some of the concepts difficult. This topic is a vital step toward confidence in using algebra so we went slowly through the topics to ensure they had a good grasp of the process for solving equations. Next term we will finish off the topic of addition and subtraction with fractions and move onto some geometry work with lines and angles.
Neptune and Saturn completed their work on number sense and showed a good understanding of the topic. They are currently working on the fractions and percentages unit which includes calculating exchange rates and price increase or decrease. Next term they will focus on developing their skill with number and geometry with topics such as standard index form, parallel lines with a transversal and area of uncommon quadrilaterals.
Jupiter and Pluto completed the unit on Maths and Money which included keeping track of a bank balance and calculating interest. They have also completed a unit on using deductive reasoning to prove geometric ideas. Next term they will focus on reasoning with geometry and probability.
Mars GCSE have completed learning all the content for the AQA Maths GCSE qualification. We are now focusing on revision in lessons. Some of their revision is practice papers where they work quietly and independently, other lessons have the students working as a group to solve more complex problems. The key is to think about what they already know and where they need to get to in order to solve the problem. All the students in this group have revision guides and knowledge organisers given to them so they can revise at home. Practice papers and revision support is available on various websites - just do a Google search for AQA GCSE Maths practice papers.
Science
Mercury focused on reproduction this term, both in humans and in plants. They studied the main organs and associated scientific names along with each organ’s function. To support their understanding of foetus development the group observed the dissection of a pregnant rat so they could see the development.
Neptune and Saturn learnt about space, both within the solar system and beyond. They also progressed in their public speaking by creating presentations on one planet each and presenting to the group. They all showed real skill at creating and following their own presentations.
Pluto and Jupiter have started their GCSE Double Award Science this term. They are following the AQA Synergy curriculum. They completed a number of required practicals, including Microscopy and Osmosis. They have developed skills at analysing data and drawing conclusions. If there are any questions or concerns about the topics, qualifications or practicals, please get in touch with jean.clarke@heathermount.co.uk for the time being.
Mars has completed the content sections of the GCSE Science. We are following the AQA Combined Science: Synergy. Between now and their exams we will focus on practice papers and questions with a deeper look at topics they still find difficult. If there are any questions or concerns about the topics, qualifications or practicals, please get in touch with jean.clarke@heathermount.co.uk for the time being.
