Maths in Term 2
In maths students have been working hard learning about numbers, different sorts of graphs, shapes, quadratic equations and much, much more. Additional photos are available in our Highlights of Term 2 Photo Gallery.
Mercury group have been focused on representing number from thousandths to a billion on a number line or by using place value charts. They were able to identify 'greater' and 'less than' accurately. Next, they worked on fractions, decimals and percentage equivalence. They are able to convert between fractions and decimals quickly and accurately and have just finished off converting with percentages.
Next term they will focus on solving problems with addition and subtraction, then problem-solving with multiplication and division, lastly calculating fractions and percentages of amounts.
Neptune and Saturn have completed working in the cartesian coordinate system where we used a large grid (shower curtain) and rulers to see how changing an equation would affect the graph of a line. [Images]
Next they worked on representing data which involved using various types of graphs with a special focus on scatter graphs. They identified the different types of data and methods to analyse data.
Next term they will be focused on learning about brackets, equations and inequalities, sequences and indices.
Jupiter and Pluto have been learning about 3D shapes and their properties; faces, edges and vertices. They also calculated surface area and volume for various 3D shapes. [Images] They end the term by using a ruler and compass to construct bisectors, locus of distance from a point and perpendiculars to a line.
Next term these two groups will focus on number, using percentages and maths & money.
Mars GCSE have been learning about solving quadratic equations with some revision of changing the subject of formulae, scatter graphs with accuracy to half a small square, numerical methods with trial and improvement, equations of a circle and simultaneous equations. Occasionally, during the course of the term, they have worked on practice exam-style questions where some were timed.
Next term they have mock exams during the weeks beginning 13th and 20th January. The first week will be focused on revision and exam skills. After their mocks, we will finish off simultaneous equations and move onto sketching graphs, proportion and Pythagorean Theorem and Trigonometry. All the students have an A4 sized revision and exam practice book, along with an A5 knowledge organiser and a knowledge retriever. They should be focusing on Maths revision a little bit each day.
