Admissions

All students attending Heathermount have an Education & Healthcare Plan (EHCP) identifying autism as their prime area of need.  We offer parents the opportunity to visit the school via our open events that take place throughout the academic year, to explore our provision, meet key staff and ask any questions about Heathermount.

If you are a parent interested in attending an open event it is essential that you complete the enquiry form as these events are highly subscribed.  The next opportunity to visit us will be in March (date to be confirmed).

Requests for admission must be made through the local authority covering the area where the student lives.  All requests are then considered by the school's admission panel that consists of the Senior Leadership Team and the Family Partnership Officer. If the panel agrees that a student meets the criteria for admission, with the agreement of the local authority the student will be offered a five day taster session.

The five day taster session:

During these five days, the student will be based in a class with other students of similar abilities and ages. The rationale for placing children on a five day assessment within a generic class is to assess their response to a typical day at Heathermount and to introduce the other students with whom they would be in contact should they be offered a full time place.

Throughout the five days, members of the multi-disciplinary team will work with the student on a one-to-one basis and as part of a small group. This enables assessment of key support areas such as communication, social skills and behavioural support.

Following these five days, and if all parties agree this is the best way forward, the young person will be invited on to an extended twelve week assessment.

Local authorities may contact the school to get details of the five day assessment fees.

The twelve week assessment:

This extended period enables all staff to observe, assess and make recommendations for the best way forward to support the young person in continuing their school career.  It concludes with a comprehensive report for the parents and local authority detailing the findings of the school.

A young person will only be offered a full-time place when all parties are in agreement.
